Seedlings were harvested at 28 days after planting and determined for gross differences in dry mass, activity of NH4+-assimilating enzymes, PEP carboxylase, and the ability to take up NH4+ ion. The results indicate that some inbreds retained the abilty to effectively utilize NH4+, but they adapted various combinations of mechanisms to cope with NH4+ concentrations. Thus, plant breeders should be able to exploit this variability and to create hibrids with enhanced performance under predominantly NH4+-N conditions. DO -10.6165/tai.1998.43(4).261
